I’m pretty sure we all love Empire, Right? However, if you’re a business woman such as myself, I’m 110% sure you love Cookie Lyon even More. Badass, blunt, and down for whatever. That pretty much sums up who she is. If we look closely, she is much more than a loud mouth business woman. There are 7 business lessons she is teaching us and I am taking notes!
CHILDREN OVER EVERYTHING
It’s no secret that the Lyon’s family is a cross between New Jack City and Black Mafia Family, but of course there’s someone holding this family together like Gorilla Glue. Dysfunctional they may be, but the love they share is displayed deeply every Wednesday night for us to see. Cookie shows us that she loves her sons no matter what and their dad despite his evil and spiteful ways. Business Women sometimes feel as though they can’t reach the top with kids. It may be hard, but it is definitely rewarding in the end. Cookie shows us that you can have money, power, and most importantly, respect. With 2 young kids of my own, acting and corporate America can be a doozy, but it’s worth it to have these little 2 boogers by my side on my journey.
CLOSED MOUTH? YOU WON’T GET FED
Speak up. Slay. Show out. Cookie is showing you every Wednesday that you have to ASK for what you want. Look closely at the tactis that she uses. Yes, she may be rude about it but you can learn a thing or two. Take her style, flip it, and make it work for you. You can’t sit around and wait on that job to come or that raise to happen. You can’t expect to gain clients for your business with a closed mouth. You can’t sit in the cubicle on mute.
Check out the blog post I did earlier on how to position yourself to get what you deserve.
Keep learning, Keep talking, Keep showing up, and Keep Showing OUT.
THERE IS NO COMPETITION
There’s no need to worry about what the next person is getting in your office or your market. What is for you, is for you! Cookie will always get what is for COOKIE. So, who cares if there are 30 other people doing what you are doing. Be yourself and you will get what is due.
And in that order.
SHOW UP. SLAY. WORK.
You better look your best everyday because people are watching! You may think that quick trip to Wal-Mart is nothing, but what happens when a potential client is there at the same time as you in your little hair bonnet. You may think that dressing down at work one day because you’re tired is cool, but what about if you have an important meeting with your boss regarding your salary? Trust me. I have been there. Cookie shows us how to show up, slay, and work. I’ve never seen her dress down. Even in the Bedroom. Be careful.
ENEMIES CAN BE SUCCESSFUL TOGETHER
Of course, you’re probably sick of your co-worker and if you own your own business you may have some jealous feelings towards the person gaining momentum in your industry. Let it go. You never know what you are missing by actually working with that person. You can be successful without being best friends. Take it from Cookie and Luscious. They’re not in the best place but when they show up and work together, they SHOW OUT. .
If you think that you will be successful on your own then you are in for a rude awakening. There is no CEO, Power Woman, or Executive handling it all on their own. DELEGATE those tasks that you can’t handle. Cookie has an assistant just as outgoing as she is because in between 3 sons, Luscious’ crazy antics, finding love, and making dynasties, Cookie just can’t do it all alone. An assistant or intern can take your business to heights you probably didn’t even think could happen.
Especially at work, lean on those individuals you call your “TEAM.” Look for traits of that person that will work well for your business. Do a 2 week trial run.
LOVE HARD BUT KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN
You can also have love and business TOGETHER. You don’t have to do it all alone. However, Just make sure you keep your eyes open and dry. Never let a argument with your partner or anything stop you from being on your A-game in that meeting.
Cookie and Luscious do a good job of coming together when needed but keeping the personal feelings of each other silent. (SOMETIMES LOL)
Cookie is a power woman that all could learn from. Comment below and tell me what you love about Cookie.
Hey, you can even tweet her this piece!
